Plinky launches, Dave raises fist at another idea that passes by
Ready for one of those “Why didn’t I think of that?” moments? Plinky launched today. Yes, yet another social site. (Another microblogging site, to be precise.)
It’s a pretty simple concept really. Once a day, the kids at Plinky ask a question. Then, everyone responds. The idea is that we’re all creating great content, collectively, and ensuring that we keep our blogs fresh. Live polling and direct Q&As are certainly not new to the Web, or media in general. What is unique about Plinky though, is that its backend ties responses to other Web apps. Here’s an example: When I responded that one of my favorite music venues is the Paradise Rock Club, Plinky populated a Google Map that highlighted Commonwealth Ave. in Boston.
Of course, you can also befriend other Plinky users and broadcast your responses across a variety of other sites. But here’s the really brilliant (in the entrepreneurial sense) part: in addition to a sidebar ad or two, I’m wondering if Plinky is also bringing in revenue from the Amazon affiliate program.
Today’s question asks users to pick three songs for a road trip mix. While responding, Plinky pulls the album art from Amazon (see above). After the response is posted, a single click takes you directly to the purchase page. And while I don’t know for sure, I’d be willing to wager that Plinky isn’t just handing over all of that potential revenue to Amazon.
So…why didn’t I think of that?
